Before I delve into details , I must first say that if you happen to be a fan of history, charming nature, ancient holy cities, a simple lifestyle, as well as calm and tranquility, then this article is certainly for you.

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun ,Town’s Label:

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is named after  Idriss 1 , a man from the lineage of the Prophet Muhammad, who came in the 8th Century  from the Middle East to Morocco fleeing the oppression of Abbasid dynasty  . He later established the first independent Islamic state in Morocco, known as the Idrisid dinasty, and he is considered the real founder of Morocco.

Zerhoun is the name of the region, or more specifically, the mountain where the city is situated.

Indeed, history is a fascinating but it can be quite lengthy to discuss. Therefore, let’s shift our focus from the aspect of time to the aspect of place.

Location:

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is situated on two hills of Mount Zerhoun, approximately 30km away from Meknes and 65km away from Fez. It is also just 4 km away from the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis. Moulay Idriss , the Historical Features :

The Zawiya

Firstly, let’s delve into the town’s historical features, particularly the religious complex located at its center, known as the “Zawiya.” This complex encompasses the mausoleum of  Idriss 1 , two mosques  for prayer, and the mausoleum of Mawla Rashid .

The Zawiya is renowned for its authentic Moroccan architecture, which beautifully showcases the rich history and culture of the region. From the intricately decorated Zellije walls to the lofty ceilings, the stunning carpets and water fountains.

The Mausoleum is a popular destination for residents from various cities across Morocco who visit to pay their respects at the tomb of the state’s founder and commemorate his legacy. It also attracts Muslims from around the world who hold deep reverence for him as a descendant of the Prophet.

Old Medina

Just a few meters away from the Zawiya, narrow paths and alleys beckon, leading you to discover antique buildings and old wooden doors that exude a sense of history. Some of these structures date back hundreds of years, evoking a feeling of timelessness.

During your visit, you’ll be surprised by the temperature differences between the alleys, particularly in the summertime. Some alleys are sunny and hot, while others are refreshingly cool due to their lower elevation on the mountain.

Panoramic view and Round Minaret

Tazgua is one of the most famous neighborhoods in the area, and it happens to be where I live. Another notable spot is Khaybar, where you shouldn’t miss the panoramic view that offers stunning vistas of the city and its surrounding hills. And, as you make your way to Khaybar, keep an eye out for the Sentissi minaret, a unique green tower adorned with Kufic-scripted Quranic verses. It’s the only one of its kind in all of Morocco.

Donkeys

While exploring the area, you’ll likely come across what I consider the unsung hero of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun: “the donkey”. These wonderful and gentle animals are commonly used by locals to transport goods, as well as for agricultural work. They’re revered as symbols of loyalty and hard work, and their presence adds to the charm and the historical character of the town.

Ok my friend , I hope I haven’t made your nose stuffy with all the dust and smells of ancient history. If I have, let me offer you a natural remedy to refresh your senses and invigorate your spirit.

Zerhoun, natural qualifications:

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is a mountainous city with a dry climate and moderate temperatures, except during the peak heat of summer. I recommend visiting during spring or Autumn for optimal weather conditions. However, even if you visit in the summer, neighborhoods such as El hofra and Tazgua offer a cool and comfortable respite from the heat.

olive Trees and olive oil

Moulay Idriss is surrounded by many olive trees, which you will definitely see on your way to us.

The olive tree is considered a blessed one in Islamic culture because it is mentioned in the Qur’an multiple times. As a result, it is highly respected and appreciated here in Zerhoun .

During the olive season, which occurs annually, farmers in Moulay Idriss and surrounding areas harvest, grind, and press olives to produce high-quality olive oil. This oil is highly regarded in Morocco for its purity and natural flavor, as most local farmers abstain from using pesticides and other chemicals in their cultivation process. By using only traditional and natural methods, they’re able to produce a 100% natural product that’s both delicious and healthy.

Bab Rmila Natural park

When discussing nature, it would be remiss not to mention Bab Rmila Natural Park, located approximately 8 kilometers east of the city. This forest is a true paradise on Mount Zerhoun, boasting an integrated ecosystem rich with many trees, medicinal herbs, and wild fruits. Additionally, it is home to a variety of wild creatures, diverse species of insects, and an array of birds whose melodies will delight your ears if you are fortunate enough to visit.

water fountains

We have discussed trees, plants, and animals in the context of nature, but it is important to acknowledge another critical environmental element that supports their existence , it’s water. Without water, these living organisms would not be able to survive and thrive.

Zerhoun region is known for its abundance of fresh water sources, including some that contain high-quality mineral water. The locals rely on these sources for drinking and irrigating their orchards. Notable among them are Ain oualili, Ain al-QasrAin Jumjama, and Ain Ben Sleiman, all of which are located in close proximity to the town. Additionally, there are other springs located in nearby villages.

For dessert, the Moulay Idriss dessert, made from natural ingredients such as nuts and dried fruits, is a must-try. You can find it in shops near the mausoleum, and they are sure to delight your taste buds.

Moussem , the biggest Zerhoun’s Event:

I understand that you are concluding this blogpost, but before we do, there is one more important aspect  that should be highlighted “the Moussem”. This spiritual folklore festival takes place at July each year and is the most significant event in the region. Sufi sects and traditional musical groups from all over Morocco participate in the festival, including the popular bands Aissaoua, Hmadsha, and Gnawa. The festival commemorates the memory of Idriss 1, the great-grandson of the Prophet and the first founder of the Moroccan state.
