Nestled in the heart of the Fes-Meknes region, Moulay Idriss Zerhoun spreads across two hillsides at the foot of Mount Zerhoun. Visitors are captivated by the town’s labyrinth of narrow alleyways, countless staircases, and terraces offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. This holy town is home to one of Morocco’s most significant landmarks: the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss I, a revered figure in Moroccan history.
Located just 60 kilometers west of Fez and a mere 5 kilometers from the historic Roman ruins of Volubilis, Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is not only a spiritual center but also a place of immense historical importance. Founded in the 8th century, the village holds deep significance as Morocco’s spiritual capital. Every year, thousands of visitors flock to Moulay Idriss to honor the legacy of its founder.
The town owes its name to both the mountain that cradles it “Zerhoun” and its founder, Moulay Idriss , a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Historical records tell us that in the late 8th century, Moulay Idriss fled Mecca to escape persecution under the Abbasid caliphate in Baghdad. He found refuge in Morocco, settling in the area of Volubilis, where he spread the teachings of Islam and gained the trust of the local Amazigh (Berber) communities.
Moulay Idriss Zerhoun went on to establish Morocco’s first Islamic dynasty, the Idrisid dynasty, which he ruled from 788 to 791. His legacy lives on, not only through the town that bears his name but also in the spiritual and cultural heritage of Morocco.
We invite you to visit Moulay Idriss Zerhoun and experience its timeless beauty, history, and spiritual warmth. Whether you’re exploring its maze-like streets, admiring its breathtaking views, or learning about its rich history, there’s something special here for everyone.
